The 2003 Police Interceptor is a full-size pursuit vehicle designed to meet the most challenging driving conditions and makes for a reliable addition to any police fleet.
Ford Police vehicles are manufactured with heavy-duty parts that are designed specifically for the varying demands and unique requirements under which they are operated.
2003 P71 Police Interceptor NEW Features:
Straight frame rails for better crash protection. The rails are hydroformed, resulting in improved manufacturing consistency and quality. The frame also supports the new front suspension.
The new rack and pinion steering system provides better road feel and a tighter turning circle. Three turns lock-to-lock means better vehicle control with less driver input. A new variable assist improves parking control and high speed maneuvering.
The entire front suspension is new. Some of the features are redesigned control arms, coil over monotube shocks, and improved toe curves. The new suspension will provide a more positive driver feedback, and help handling and transient roll control.
Monotube shocks are moved outboard of the frame rails to improve the shock motion ratio, and provide more resistance to side skate on rough roads.
For improved brake cooling, the front rotors are thicker, and the rear are vented. Heavy-Duty front and rear disc brake pads meet the varying demands of different police service for fade resistance and other performance requirements. A new friction material is used to resist wear, fading, and squealing. ABS becomes standard.
The Goodyear Eagle RS-A Plus Tire has improved wear in service, improved steering feel, and improved traction in rain and snow. They also resist getting flat spots during extended parking periods. Ford Motor Company installs heavy-duty steel wheels. Goodyear Eagle RS-A PLUS tires (including the spare) are speed-rated radials (225-60-R16) for police use.
Ford P71 Police Vehicle have a unique high-performance powertrain including transmission and an aluminum driveshaft, which is designed for maximum vehicle performance. Crown Victoria P71 Police Vehicles are designed to operate in the Overdrive gear selector position while in pursuit. Optimum performance will be obtained in Overdrive.

A new variable speed electric fan for engine cooling is controlled by the PCM. A knock sensor prevents detonation from low octane fuels.
The high-output alternator provides 200 amperes of current to support the high power requirements of modern police equipment. Output at idle is approximately 130 amperes.
A new Power Distribution Box is standard in the passenger compartment and optional in the trunk. It provides ten fuse locations to provide power to aftermarket equipment and signal connections for six key functions. The optional trunk power point is a battery access port for Police auxiliary equipment mounted in the trunk and is capable of supplying 80 amps of battery power. Battery access is via two studs contained in an enclosure, mounted on the right side fender support in the trunk. The terminal with the red wires is the battery positive, and the terminal with the black wire is the ground. The front power distribution box contains two 50 Amp fuses, which protect the power point.
An interfacing connector is provided on the headlight circuit for use of the headlights as alternating flashers (wig-wags). The connector is located in front of the radiator. A protective cap is attached to prevent contaminants from entering the connector when a wig-wag module is not installed. Code 3 700 HLF Code 3 710 HLF
